An Auburn Police Officer witnessed a robbery Monday night in Auburn. Late Monday night, into Tuesday morning, Auburn police officers were dispatched to the 7-11 Store on Sacramento Street for a reported theft of merchandise. The suspect had left the store on foot northbound on Auburn Folsom Road. The suspect was described as being a white male adult with short dark hair, approximately 6’2” tall with a thin build, clean shaven, wearing black pants and no shirt.
At 12:27 AM, Officer Hamelin spotted a White Male Adult fitting the suspect description walking on SR 49 near Fulweiler Avenue. Officer Hamelin turned his patrol car around and saw the suspect cross the highway and enter the 49er Shell. Officer Hamelin drove to the convenience store and witnessed the suspect steal a twelve pack of beer. The store clerk attempted to stop the theft; however, the suspect held onto the stolen property by means of force and fear. Det. Sgt. Dale Hutchins with the Auburn Police Department says the suspect, 32-year old Dereck Norris did not comply with Officer Hamlin’s Commands.
Officer Hamlin was assisted by another Auburn Police officer as well as 2 Placer County Patrol deputies.
Dereck Norris was taken to Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital for treatment of minor injuries he sustained while being taken into custody and being combative with the arresting officers. No officers or deputies were seriously injured during the arrest of Dereck Norris, 32 years of age. Det. Sgt Hutchins says Norris was booked on several charges.
Norris was booked into the Placer County jail.
