Motorcycle Fatality Near Lake of the Pines

A collision between a motor home and a motorcycle on HWY 49 near Lake of the Pines led to a fatality Sunday.

On June 30th at 4 PM Sunday, the motorcycle rider was driving his 1999 Harley-Davidson northbound on SR-49, south of Sharonjack Road (south of Streeter Rd) and was in the #2 lane. At the same time, Victoria Smith of Gardnerville NV was parked on the right shoulder of northbound SR-49 at Sharonjack Road, in her 2008 Road Trek motor home. Grass Valley CHP Officer Greg Tassone says Smith was lost and decided to turn around.

The rider was ejected from his motorcycle and came to rest on the ground in front of the left front tire of Smith’s vehicle. Officer Tassone says the motorcycle rider has been identified.

An off-duty firefighter arrived on scene moments after the collision and found Party #2 to be unconscious and with no pulse. He began CPR on Party #2 until fire personnel from the Higgins Fire department arrived on scene. Party #2 was pronounced deceased by paramedics at the scene shortly thereafter.

Drugs and/or alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this collision. The #1 southbound lane and the #1 northbound lane of SR-49 were blocked for approximately 2 hours for the collision investigation.
