A tragic accident took the life of a local Boy Scout Leader and injured several scouts from our area including the son of the scout Leader.
Sgt Cadillo of the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office says they positively identified the driver of the 2003 Honda Mini Van from new Castle as the Scout Leader.
According to the Ukiah CHP office, 73 year old Eugene Galetti of Redwood Valley was driving his ‘06 Ford F-250 pickup eastbound on State Route 20 approaching Potter Valley when he failed to see Joan Schmidt age 67 of Potter Valley driving a 2011 Toyota Sequoia directly ahead of him.
Mrs. Schmidt was at almost at a complete stop for westbound traffic with her signal on to turn when she was hit from the rear by the pickup, pushing the Sequoia forward into another vehicle. The pickup ended up in the westbound lane and struck the Honda driven by Mr. Garrison with the boy scouts from Placer County at approximately 55 miles per hour.
Both vehicles spun following the collision and were struck by other vehicles. The Honda Odyssey driven with Mr. Garrison came to rest facing south in the State Route 20 #1 westbound lane. Mr. Garrison was pronounced deceased at the scene according to CHP.
The scouts were all transported to local hospitals. As they are all minors their condition is not being released.
