The city of Auburn hosted a bus tour around the city to search for potential homeless shelter locations Monday evening.
The Auburn City council is currently considering zoning and site alternatives as it considers code amendments necessary to comply with State requirements for the zoning of emergency homeless shelters. Mayor Kevin Hanley addressed the group of residents gathered to board the bus from the parking lot of City Hall.
Reg Murray, Senior Planner for the city, guided the tour thorough various stops including Sacramento Street, Borlan Ave, Auburn Ravine road, Highway 49 and Nevada City and Enterprise Drive. Murray explains the city is under a mandate from the state.
Part of the process is more than finding an empty lot or empty building but space adjacent to services.
The audience was welcomed into the council chambers to share their opinions of the tour. All the speakers appreciated the difficult decision the council was responsible to make. The next city council meeting to discuss the Homeless shelter designation will be August 12th.
