Georgetown Empire Fire

Nearly 100 homes were evacuated Saturday as a 38-acre grass fire threatened homes in Georgetown.

The Empire Fire, started around 3 p.m. near Empire Creek Circle, according to Cal Fire Public Information Officer Daniel Berlant who says one home was lost but the fire, whipped by winds, could have been much worse.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department conducted the evacuations and closed Greenwood Road to the public for resources to get to the fire. No injuries were reported. Berlant said crews jumped on the fire quickly, limiting spread. The fire was contained over night and crews were mopping up on Sunday. No cause has been established, the fire is still under investigation.The fire was held at 38 acres and is 100% contained.
