Cal-Fire State Fire Update

Thanks to the efforts by firefighters, progress is being made on the 10 major fires in California and several are estimated to be fully contained in the next few days. While a majority of the large wildfires are burning on federal land, CAL FIRE and local fire departments continue to support the US Forest Service with fire resources. Cal-Fire Spokesperson Daniel Berlant says many of the 9 thousand firefighters come from Placer County.

Nearly 4,200 firefighters continue to battle the Rim Fire near Yosemite National Park. The Rim Fire is now the 7th largest wildfire in California’s recorded history.

One of the leading causes of wildfires in California is powered equipment use like lawnmowers used on dry grass. Berlant reminds Californians to take care with lawn equipment over this long holiday weekend.

One spark from the metal blade on a rock can spark a wildfire. Berlant advises to cut dry grass in the early morning before 10 a.m. and never use lawnmowers on dry grass.
