APD Warns of Phone Scams

The Auburn Police Department is reporting phone scams on the increase in our area. Det. Sgt. Dale Hutchins says 2 classic scams were reported to him again on Tuesday morning. The first is the Publishers clearing house scam. Sgt Hutchins wants you to know that Publishers Clearing House will show up at your door if you have won, they won’t call asking for money.

The 2nd scam uses fear to intimidate our residents, telling them that something has happened to our children or grandchildren.

The Sgt says in most cases, theft and especially identity theft occurs when we give our information to the criminals that take advantage. The best way to protect your self is to hang up or ask for a number to call back then double check the information.
