An 18-year old Grass Valley man suffered fatal injuries after at clash Wednesday morning. Shortly before 10 am 18 year old William Hawkyard was driving a 1990 Mazda Miata soft-top sedan westbound on Indian Springs Rd approaching Michelle Ct in the Penn Valley area. He had 1 passenger with him, 18-year old Dakota Smith, seated in the right front seat.
Hawkyard was traveling at a high speed well in excess of the 40 MPH speed limit when he attempted to negotiate a 35 MPH advisory curve. Hawkyard lost control of the vehicle while exiting the curve and eventually went off of the north roadway edge. The vehicle struck several objects including a utility pole. The vehicle ultimately overturned onto its roof and rotated back across the roadway until it came to rest. This caused major damage to the soft-top roof of the vehicle as well as injuries to the occupants.
Smith sustained fatal head injuries in the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Hawkyard received moderate injuries to his head and face and was flown via helicopter air ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center where he was in stable condition.
CHP is handling the investigation. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor in this incident. Both lanes of Indian Springs Rd were closed while emergency crews worked at the scene.
Along with CHP ground units, the agencies responding to this incident were the Penn Valley Fire Protection District, CalStar helicopter, and the Nevada County Sheriff’s Dept and Coroner.
