Collision on 49 Complicated by Uncooperative Driver

Lack of cooperation from drivers in a chain reaction collision on HWY 49 Thursday continues to hamper the investigation.

At 5:25 PM Thursday night, multiple vehicles were driving southbound on SR-49 approaching the intersection with Alta Sierra Dr.  A Toyota sedan with two occupants was stopping for the stop-light intersection ahead. A Ford sedan with two occupants was slowing/stopping behind the Toyota. The third vehicle in line was a Subaru Impreza occupied by two males. The Subaru failed to stop for the slowing traffic ahead and collided into the rear of the Ford, which in turn collided into the Toyota.

After the collision, the vehicles remained blocking the roadway. Grass valley CHP Officer Greg Tasonne says the 2 occupants of the Subaru did not cooperate with authorities.

The female driver 35 year old sunny Ricks with addresses in Auburn, Foresthill and Nevada City was evaluated for DUI but was found not under the influence. The reason for the incident was determined to be distracted driving (using an electronic device and/or texting while driving).

A check of the driver discovered she was wanted on an arrest warrant in Placer County for $5,000 related to a prior charge of Petty Theft. She was taken into custody at the scene and booked into the Placer County Jail.
