Seniors First Loses Meals on Wheels Funding

Local charitable organization, Seniors First, Providing various programs for Seniors in Placer County, to keep Seniors independent, was notified by the Area 4 agency on Aging, who is a stand-alone joint powers authority with non-profit status, that their Meals on Wheels Funding which delivers hot meals to home bound seniors will be discontinued and the Asian Community Center of Sacramento will take over the delivery of frozen meals to a reduced number of Placer County Residents beginning at the end of January.

Seniors First executive Director Candace Roeder says it is a shame that our Placer County seniors will not get a hot meal or the personal visit many of them look forward to each day.

Roeder says many volunteers are heating meals and taking them to area seniors on their own or are picking up seniors who can’t drive or use public transportation to Seniors First Cafes in the area for not only a hot meal but the socialization they need.

Roeder says Seniors First is appealing the decision and they will have an answer by the end of the month. Roeder is asking for the community’s support of the program that provided 75,000 meals to home bound seniors and in our nine Senior Cafés in 2011.
