SUPERVISORS ENCOURAGE RESIDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN BIG DAY OF GIVING

The Placer County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to endorse an innovative one-day fund-raising campaign set to be held Tuesday, May 6 for local nonprofit organizations.

The BIG Day of Giving is a coordinated regional online drive that includes nonprofit groups in Placer, Sacramento, El Dorado and Yolo counties. The region-wide goal is to raise $1 million and gain contributions from 5,000 new donors.

Donations will be accepted throughout the day on May 6 at www.givelocalnow.org/.

The Placer Community Foundation is partnering with the Sacramento Region Community Foundation and the Yolo Community Foundation in a regional campaign which is part of a nationwide 24-hours-of-giving effort known as Give Local America.

At Tuesday’s meeting, board members voted unanimously to approve a proclamation declaring May 6 to be the BIG Day of Giving in Placer County. The proclamation also encourages residents to support the campaign.

In Placer County, the online fund-raising campaign is being spearheaded by the Placer Community Foundation. At least 78 of the approximately 400 nonprofit organizations participating in the regional campaign serve Placer County residents and have offices in the county.

Supervisor Kirk Uhler brought the proclamation to the attention of his board colleagues.

“If you have heard of a nonprofit or supported nonprofits, the odds are they are probably participating in this,” he said, emphasizing that donors will be able to review an online list of participating nonprofit organizations and make secure donations to the ones they want to support.

Jim Williams, a member of the Placer Community Foundation’s board of directors, addressed the Board of Supervisors, noting that the day-long campaign will increase the visibility of local nonprofit organizations while raising funds for their programs. He noted that the organizations receiving donations will also get shares from a pool of matching funds that will be available on May 6.

“Our nonprofit organizations are deserving of our support, and we genuinely appreciate your support in encouraging people to give with their hearts on May 6,” he told board members.

Supervisor Uhler and Williams noted that participating nonprofit organizations provide a wide range of critical services, including shelter for the homeless, food for hungry families, support to seniors and youths, access to the arts, care for animals, and preservation of open spaces and historical landmarks.

The Westfield Galleria at Roseville will host a kick-off party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6 in the mall’s center court. The event will feature entertainment and prizes for people who make donations during the party.
