Amgen in Auburn

Volunteers gathered behind Auburn’s City Hall around 10:30 am for one final briefing from Auburn Police Chief John Ruffcorn on their roll in the Amgen tour of California Bicycle race.

Auburn Mayor Bridgette powers also thanked the volunteers for making the event go smoothly.

The Peloton came through Auburn on a beautiful but breezy Mother’s Day and the head wind slowed the leaders, missing the 12:30 expected arrival time by over half an hour. The lead group, of less than a dozen cyclists, was followed by the larger peloton 5 minutes behind. The racers got a late start out of Sacramento leaving the Capital steps shortly after 10;30 am. Making the 40 mile trip up the hill into the Auburn then into the American River canyon toward cool, the riders then returning to Sacramento to complete day one of the 8 day 700 mile race.
