Caltrans is now targeting mid-July as a start date for projects on Highway 49 near Auburn and Highway 193 in Newcastle that are both expected to result in delays for motorists.
A portion of Highway 49 heading down into the American River Canyon will be subject to one-way traffic controls starting July 14 for construction of a new concrete barrier.
One-way traffic controls will also be in effect from July 14 to July 28 as work proceeds to replace a small viaduct near the Newcastle tunnel on Highway 193. Caltrans is planning to close just the small portion of Highway 193 near the tunnel and the shutdown will be at night.
Caltrans spokeswoman Rochelle Jenkins said the closure will start July 14 and last six days. The closure will take place over those 6 days from 9:00pm to 5:00am.
Jenkins added that Caltrans is advising truckers with large loads, including big rigs and logging trucks, to avoid Highway 193 both day and night during construction.
