An Early Morning Motorcycle Accident Friday Took A Life and Closed I-80

A sig alert was issued Friday morning after a fatal motorcycle accident shut down all lanes on Westbound Interstate 80 just west of the Weimar Cross Road. A motorcyclist collided with a big rig heading west on I-80.

According to CHP Officer Sergeant Dave Little, the male rider of a newer Harley Davidson motorcycle was lane-splitting, driving between the two vehicles, between a semi tractor trailer in the #1 lane and a SUV towing a trailer in the #2 lane.  After the rider passed the two vehicles that were both driving approximately 65 mph, the driver lost control of his motorcycle. The rider was ejected into the #1 lane in front of the semi, which ran him over. The driver of the semi was unable to avoid hitting the motorcycle rider.

Placer Fire performed CPR on the victim, but the motorcyclist died at the scene as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash which happened at about 8:40 a.m.

Traffic was backed up as far as Colfax. Traffic  was diverted for a short time off I-80 to Ponderosa Way, and then back onto I-80 at West Paoli Lane.  During the traffic re-rout, a semi truck got stuck on the rail road crossing momentarily at Poali Lane.

By 10:30, all lanes were opened and CHP lifted sig alert.

At this time, CHP is working on the investigation and KAHI will update you as soon as we have more details. The name of the victim is pending notification of next of kin.
