Drunk Driver Hits School Bus

A Thursday a morning multi-vehicle accident happened near the town of Somerset involving a school bus and a suspected drunk driver.  The accident caused minor injuries and road closures.

The head-on collision happened at 6:50 a.m. and involved a Chevy Equinox SUV and an El Dorado Union High School District school bus that was en route to Union Mine High School on Grizzly Flat Road.

The driver of the SUV, 24 year old, Steven Gruber of Grizzly Flat, crossed over the double yellow line into the pathway of the bus.  The driver was arrested at the scene for suspicion of DUI.

Placerville Officer Quinn Cuthbertson said that the quick reactions of school bus driver Jennifer Shields probably saved lives.

“Shields took evasive action and turned the school bus hard to the left, which caused the vehicles to hit right front to right front,” Cuthberton said.

Major damage was reported to the right front of the school bus.

The El Dorado County Office of Education reported that there were no students  who were seriously injured in this morning’s crash. There was however two students on the bus who were transported to the hospital as a precaution.

The remaining students were pulled from the bus and transferred to another bus.   Parents were notified by the school district of the accident as standard procedure.
