On Monday morning at approximately 4:00am, deputies responded to a burglary at the Colfax Car Wash. Placer County Sheriff’s Officers were told by the car wash owner that he was observing a man through the remote surveillance camera system drill the cash machine.
The suspect, Shane Schmidt, 39, and his female accomplice, Sandra Byrd, 35, were then spotted by Placer County Sheriff’s Officers at a nearby gas station in Colfax. When the deputy arrived, Schmidt fled the scene and a foot pursuit ensued. Ultimately Schmidt got away and is still at large.
While Schmidt was being pursued, Byrd jumped in the car and drove away from the scene. She was heading west on Interstate 80 when the vehicle was spotted by another deputy.
Byrd refused to stop the car when approached by the officers and subsequently Byrd led the police on a high-speed chase from Colfax to Roseville. Byrd’s car was eventually stopped after she ran over a spike strip that Roseville Police had placed near Douglas Boulevard.
She was arrested and booked into Placer County Jail for evading police, driving with a suspended license, and resisting arrest.
Detectives are still actively looking for suspect Schmidt, who is on probation out of Turlock. He was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt with a white emblem, pants of an unknown color and black and white tennis shoes. He is described as 6-feet tall, weighing 200 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes.
Anyone who sees Schmidt is urged to call the Placer County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 889-7800.
