At 6:10 p.m., Thursday evening, there was one fatality caused by a overturned trailer that crossed into oncoming traffic traveling northbound on SR-49 just North of Nishinam Road. According to Greg Tassone of the Grass Valley CHP, Terry Cordell of Newcastle was driving a Ford F-350 that was hauling a large tractor. The vehicle was traveling at an unsafe rate when it lost control of its trailer which began overturning directly into the path of oncoming vehicles.

A Toyota 4Runner driven by Andrew Zwolinski of Nevada City and a GMC pickup driven by Wesley Guthrie of Auburn were heading Southbound on SR-49 and both were impacted by the overturned trailer. Zwolinski, who was driving directly in front of Guthrie, saw the trailer overturning into his lane and accelerated in an attempt to avoid the collision. The 4Runner was hit in the rear but otherwise made it past the trailer avoiding serious injury to the vehicles passenger. The trailer then overturned fully onto the GMC pickup were its impact caused a fatal injury to Guthrie. Cordell and his passenger did not sustain any injuries.

The accident caused a full closure of SR-49 for 5 hours to allow for the investigation as well as the massive operation to clear the roadway.

The Grass Valley CHP is handling the ongoing investigation. Cordell was released from the scene but his vehicle and equipment were impounded for evidence and further examination. More information on possible charges in this case will be released as they become available.
