The Homeless situation is getting worse across California and cities and counties are wrestling with the problem. Some officials are blaming the increase on the housing crisis that California is suffering with. Tent Cities are appearing in parks and open spaces and shelters are overflowing causing additional health risk as the homeless community uses the streets and sidewalks as their bathrooms and depository for used needles.A Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom says if elected he will make the homeless situation his top priority. One idea Newsom is proposing is to create a new statewide homelessness council with a cabinet-level position to lead a a regional approacha to addressing homelessness. His goal is to tie state funding to increased development at the local level of supportive housing for homeless people, and to fund, with state dollars, outreach efforts to help get people enrolled in the federal disability program.
