The California State Legislature starts the 2023 session this week with swearing in newly and returning candidates. The Governor has asked the new legislature to start discussion on setting new oversight on gasoline prices and issue a new “Wind Fall Profit” tax on major oil companies. The Governor changed the word tax to penalty, this week, to avoid the need for a congressional approval required by the state constitution if is is classified as a tax. In the period since the beginning of December, pump prices for unleaded regular gasoline had dropped to mid $4.00 and some areas below $4.00 a gallon.

Intel Corp. plans to lay off dozens of Northern California employees in early 2023, including more than 100 at its large Folsom campus. The semiconductor company plans to permanently eliminate about 111 jobs in Folsom, according to a notice filed late last week to the California Employment Development Department. The layoffs are expected to take place by the end of January, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed to the state.
