California’s population has grown by 215,000 people and is now just short of 40 million. Data released on Friday shows the state’s population has reached 39.8 million as of July 1, 2018. Government officials said increase in population is primarily due to a higher number of births than deaths, but California’s population was also boosted by the addition of 21,000 immigrants. That means more people entered California than left between July 2017 and 2018. Inland counties like Amador, Placer, and Merced lead the way for growth, but some counties in mostly rural areas did see a reduction in population.

The number of California residents is far greater than any other state. Texas comes in second with nearly 29 million people, followed by Florida and New York.

California’s populationA has grown by 2.6 million people since the 2010 census.
