A City of Auburn Policeman escaped what could have been a disaster last night when his vehicle went out of control and slammed into a retaining wall near Lincoln Way and Electric Street, caught fire and trapped the office inside the burning patrol car. This occurred as the patrolman stopped a motorcycle rider from Meadow Vista, who had run a red light, then sped away with the policeman in pursuit at high speed. Two local residents who were near the burning patrol car entered the burning vehicle and pulled the patrolman clear. In the meantime, CHP Helicopter officer spotted the motorcyclist hiding in a lower part of Lincoln way and aided other police officers in arresting 29-year-old Ryan Schittenhart arresting him on several charges including DUI. The name of the Auburn Police Officer is being withheld by authorities allowing the officer and his family to deal with the near tragedy. Police Chief Ryan Kinnan publicly thanked the two residents who reacted to a very dangerous situation ricking their own lives to assist the patrolman.
