The Rio Vista Bridge is open for traffic today after being closed most of the weekend. After a mechanical failure, the bridge was frozen in the down position and manually opened at 10 pm Friday night so ships that were being held in West Sacramento could get back to sea. The bridge reopened at 3 am today for traffic. 25 thousand motorists use the bridge to cross the Sacramento River daily and detours over the weekend cost motorists several extra hours to travel to popular river spots.
