In a filing before the State PUC commission, PG&E has stated that splitting the company into two separate business, one gas and the other electric, is feasible from a technical and operational perspective since each has its own operational control center. PG&E Gas contributes about one fourth of the utilitya s revenue. The utility also presented the PUC with the downside of separation and that is incremental costs to separate the two which would probably force increases in rates to customers. PG&E stated in the filing that keeping the companies together under one single holding company would help reduce these costs. Also discussed was breaking the company into regional operating companies but said this would be a lengthy process, very costly, and they did not believe there would be any increase in saftey as had been proposed.
