Two small girls reported missing near their Benbow home on the North Coast Friday evening were found safe by several research agencies yesterday morning. The Humboldt County Sheriffa s Office said search and rescue teams located Caroline Carrico, age 5, and Leia Carrico, age 8, alive and well, more than 48 hours after they were last seen in southern Humboldt County. The girls were found at about 10:30 am about 1.4 miles from their home in Benbow. The girls told first responders that they were following a deer trail when they had become lost. The two decided to stay put, drinking fresh water from huckleberry leaves, according to the sheriffa s office. Several North State Sheriff departments including Placer and Eldorado Counties, helped as part of the 250 personnel that joined in the search that also included California National Guard, CHP and the Governors Emergency Service office. The sisters, Caroline Carrico, age 5, and Leia Carrico, age 8 were evaluated by medical personnel for dehydration and given water and warm, dry clothing. They were reunited with family shortly after being located.
