By Jerry Henry on March 8, 2019.
Oroville dam officials are preparing to use the new spillway for the first time since it was partially destroyed two years ago. The evacuation of almost 200 thousand people resulted in a loss of confidence that the state built and owned dam would be safe again. Over 2 billion dollars have been spent in rebuilding the concrete spillway which was completed November last year. The dam is currently releasing 5 thousand cubic feet of water per second which is exiting through the Hyatt Tower Power plant. Officials say if another atmospheric river hits the region it could push levels to require opening the spillway.
