The strike by the Sacramento unified teachers union on April 11th that will potentially could affect 40 thousand students, plan to use substitute teachers and will pay up to $500 per teacher per day for the coverage to keep the schools open that day. Even though the district believes many teachers will actually stay in their classrooms, they are preparing to have substitutes and emergency teachers to make sure the school day continues.

Normally, a substitute can make anywhere from $130 to $200 for ongoing work. However, for April 11, the district would offer substitutes and emergency teachers up to $500 a day if a strike occurs. Union officials say the money will come from savings of teachers that donat show up for work that day, in other words, no show, no pay, so pay the subs. The union assures that the substitute teachers have the same credentials as regular teachers. The strike has been advertised as getting the attention of the Sacramento unified administrators who are not, in the union opinion, bargaining in good faith about how to reduce the 35 million dollar budget shortfall which will be a face off this November and could force a state takeover of the district because of failure to properly administrate the funds provided to the school district.
