The body that was discovered last week in the American River Canyon area was confirmed to be that of missing 33-year-old Sacramento woman, Yin Wong.
Placer County Sheriffa s Coronera s Office completed the autopsy of Wong’s body Friday morning and along with the information that confirmed the identity was that of the discovery that mountain lions had began damaging Wong’s remains. However, the coroners office said that it does not believe the mountain lions had anything to do with the series of events that led to up to Wong’s death. That part of this story is still under investigation and may have to wait until toxicology reports are returned in what could be up to a two week wait according to Sheriff’s Spokesperson, Dena Erwin.
The Placer County Sheriffa s Office is in contact with both California State Parks and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. They advise that this is not abnormal behavior for a mountain lion and that therea s no reason to believe that there is danger to the public. But anyone who hikes, bikes, or rides horses in the canyon should always be aware of the presence of wild animals, and should always take precautions.
Fish and Wildlife suggests the following: Do not bike, hike, or jog alone; avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active – dawn, dusk, and at night; do not approach a mountain lion. If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run. Instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children. If attacked, fight back.
