The special election for state senate area 1 was held yesterday. The election caused due to the seat being vacated by Ted Gains who was elected to the state Board of Equalization. The results in so far show a close race with Brian Dahle in first place with 28.7 % and Kevin Kiley with 25.8% which pushes the contest to a runoff vote needed which will take place on June 4th. A The seat represents about 1 million people, including residents in Alpine, El Dorado, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou counties and parts of Placer and Sacramento counties. County election offices expect to finish counting votes by April 4. This seat has been held by a Republican for more than 40 years
