Rocklin City Council Tuesday approved Estia at Rocklin, a controversial, 181-unit residential project at one of the last big open parcels in the city next to William Jessup University.

After lengthy discussion at the regular council meeting Tuesday, council members voted 3-2 to rezone the 30-acre parcel North of Sunset Boulevard, west of University Avenue and east of Highway 65. The site was originally part of land owned by Jessup University and was presumed to be developed as part of the campus being exempt from certain development fees. The university has since sold the property for private development. As proposed, the project includes 181 one-story homes on 20 western acres of the site. Project spokesman Roseville attorney Marcus Lo Duca said the plan includes 10.5% or 19 affordable-housing units. He added 107 one-bedroom duplex units will be mixed with 74 two-bedroom, single-family homes, all with fenced backyards.

Fuel prices continued to climb in Sacramento and California this week as the average cost for regular gasoline surpassed $6 per gallon again, according to the American Automobile Association. The statewide average gas price Thursday was $6.18, representing a 67-cent increase from a week ago; A 91 cent jump from a month ago, according to AAAas gas prices data. Californiaas highest average cost was $6.43 on June 14. The cost of regular gas in Sacramento County surpassed the $6 mark overnight, when it climbed 15 cents from Wednesday to Thursday to an average cost of $6.13 per gallon, according to AAA. The county reached a high average cost of $6.44 on June 13. The national average for regular gas also rose this week as Hurricane Ian pounded communities in Florida and displaced residents. AAA says the hurricaneas full impact is unknown, but gasoline distribution could be limited in impacted areas due to lack of electricity and flooded roads and highways. California had the steepest increase over the past week and note we had no hurricanes, wildfire activity was minimal, and other than some routine and non-expected maintenance issues, the increase in gasoline prices is questionable or political. We need to question this!

Oregon, which had the second highest jump in prices, climbed 59 cents; Washington had a 53-cent spike. AAA reported that Energy Information Administration data shows gas demand increased nationwide last week while total domestic gasoline stocks decreased. So, do we need to question why this is a fact?
