The addition of bike lanes in Sacramento is being highlighted today for two reasons, one it takes away vehicles lanes in already over loaded traffic streets, and secondly the funds that are being used to create the bike lanes is coming from the gas tax that was raised two years ago. Drivers are complaining that these funds were to fix roads, not create bike lanes and take away lanes. The gas tax did in fact provide for mass transit and road safety improvements. The city officials say they planned for the bike lanes early on and cutting traffic lanes, in their opinion, slows down drivers and therefore is a safety improvement.
