Auburn Journal reported Wednesday that representatives from Placer County, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Newcastle Fire, Placer Hills Fire Protection District, South Placer Fire District, Auburn City Fire Department and CAL FIRE attended the groundbreaking of a new fire station to be built in New Castle Tuesday. Newcastle Fire Chief Ian Gow and Newcastle Fire Protection District Board member Lawrence Bettencourt thanked many – including the Newcastle and United Auburn Indian Communities, and the USDA – for their support in bringing the new fire station to fruition. Gow said without the advice and assistance provided by the United Auburn Indian Community to secure federal funding they “wouldn’t be here”. Funding to construct the fire station includes tax dollars the district began collecting after the passing of Measure B in 2013, and a $3.7 million loan from the USDAas Community Facilities Direct Loan Program. The new fire station will be a 6,939 square-foot building with living quarters, multiple bathrooms, reception area, and apparatus room. The land, at 9350 Old State Highway just off Interstate 80, was donated by Newcastle resident Jerald Saladana.

Chief Gow in a written statement said: aNewcastle formed a Joint Operating Agreement with the Placer Hills and Penryn fire districts to share administrative costs and ensure closer cooperation and coordination among all three districts,a. aThe new fire station will make it easier to provide a consistent and reliable level of fire protection for all homeowners and business properties.a

A man accused of killing his parents in their Loomis home appeared in court on Wednesday. The Placer County District Attorneyas Office filed a criminal complaint against Dennis Lynch, charging him with two counts of murder with special allegations. Lynch pleaded not guilty on Wednesday. Lynch was arrested in late March after the Placer County Sheriffas Office said they conducted a welfare check at a home on Lake Forest Drive in Loomis. When deputies knocked, no one answered, but they said they could smell a foul odor coming from behind the door. While deputies worked on finding a way inside, Lynch raced from the house with a replica handgun and escaped into a nearby forested area. While deputies searched for Lynch, they said additional law enforcement entered the home and found the bodies of 80-year-old Gerald Upholt and 67-year-old Katheryn Lynch. A short time later, deputies said they found Dennis Lynch in a field on Lomida Lane before he ran from them again. Deputies said he made his way to a gated community off Auburn Folsom Road. When deputies confronted him, they said he was armed, and shot him. He was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Lynch is being held without bail.

New documents from Californiaas Department of Finance provide a closer look into Gov. Gavin Newsomas push to send hundreds of dollars in debit cards to California car owners to compensate for high gasoline prices at California pumps. The budget bill documents shed light on who will not qualify for the money, including drivers who did not register their vehicles in California by April 6 of this year, and those who owe any fees, penalties, or other requirements to the Department of Motor Vehicles. The governor is proposing transferring money from the general fund into a tax relief fund to send out the money which will require a two-thirds vote from the Legislature. The bill also has a few blanks because they will be negotiation points with the Legislature. Those blanks include the total cost of the program, total payment amounts and the cap on the value of vehicles eligible in the state.
