Starting Jan 1, Auburn police will have legal power to cite youth for using tobacco products when they are underage. The new law will cite anyone under 21 found with tobacco products. Offenders under 18 will be required to attend the Back to Zero: Youth Tobacco Education Program. Offenders aged between 18 and 21 will have a choice A-a take the class or be fined $100. People registered for military service at 18 are exempt. The city will also begin requiring businesses that sell tobacco products register and obtain a tobacco retail license for $850 annually. The department will use the fees associated with the sale of tobacco to conduct tobacco education and enforcement activities, as is common in other California cities. Auburn Police Chief Ryan Kinnan quoted in an AJ interview said: a density of tobacco retailers in Auburn is also a part of new laws. The city of Auburn has 21 retailers in 7.5 square miles, include 4 within 500 feet of EV Cain Middle School. The new law will prohibit new tobacco retailers from establishing within 1,000 feet of a school or park and must be at least 500 feet from another tobacco retailer.a Retailers will also be prohibited from selling all flavored tobacco products except mint, menthol and wintergreen combustible cigarettes and chew.
