CalTrans District 3 has sent out a warning that very cold temperatures are expected to bring valley frosts and below freezing conditions in the Sierra, with mountain temperatures down to single digits.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory with snow accumulations forecast for elevations as low as 2,000 feet, including a dusting of snow as low as 1,000 feet. Auburn is at the 1,200 feet elevation. The severe cold will create slick and icy conditions on all Northern California roadways, so motorists should be prepared for winter driving conditions through Friday morning, as a cold storm brings winter temperatures to Northern California.

There will be intermittent periods of snow accumulation on Donner and Echo Summit passes, which will impact any travel on foothill and mountain highways, including Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 50 where chain controls are expected to be enforced.
