The California Legislative season ends Friday. Gov. Gavin Newsom has not decided whether he will increase paid family leave, limit solitary confinement in prisons or make the state a haven for transgender children. The Governor has signed several legislative bills in dealing with creating California a sanctuary for women who have a legal abortion even if they live in another state who may have abortion being illegal in that state, and protections for women who turn to California for legal protection.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law on Wednesday that will allow farmworkers to vote by mail in union elections, one year after he vetoed a similar version of the bill. Newsom joined labor leaders at a United Farm Workers vigil in front of the Capitol to sign the law, Assembly Bill 2183. His signature on the law marks a significant change of course for Newsom, whose office as recently as August said the governor planned to veto the bill unless its supporters agreed to more changes. Instead, Democrats overwhelmingly passed the bill in Assembly and Senate. UFW, meanwhile led a 335-mile march to the Capitol and drew support from other unions in urging Newsom to support the bill. Support for the bill was also present from Nancy Pelosi and President Biden.

Governor Gavin Newsom says heas tackling the stateas housing problem head-on. On Wednesday, he signed dozens of bills he argues will accelerate new, affordable housing in California. The governor acknowledges housing has been a challenge for years in California, but he hopes new legislation will change that, starting with one key action: build. Newsom specifically highlighted Senate Bill 6 and Assembly Bill 2011. Supporters say the legislation will allow California to fast-track new housing in commercial areas and empty properties once used for parking lots, offices, and retail space. The governor also announced $1 billion for 30 projects he says will create more than 2,750 new homes across the state.
