Governor Newsom announced yesterday he is lifting the state of emergency declaration on California February 28th, of 2023 which will be phasing out 27 of 600 directors he established. The proclamation and other executive orders signed during the pandemic, after 2 1/2 years will retire the COVID-19 emergency proclamation. Governor Newsom said that the state of emergency was an effective and necessary tool that protected the state and could not have achieved this point without it. The announcement comes amid concerns of potential winter COVID surge and the Biden administration last week extended the national public health emergency declaration until January 11th due to concern that it might wane interest in getting booster shots. California is recording a daily average of 7.5 new cases per 100,000 residents which is an improvement from last winter’s peak of more than 300 new cases per 1000 according to data from the California Department of public health.
